Togas, Sandals & Chariots If we go back to the around the year 700 BC, we’ll discover the birth of an Empire that’s never been equaled or matched in all of history. The Roman Empire remains a mystery to some, because it didn’t spring up over night; its growth was done in baby steps but with a deliberate intent of controlling the world. The Empire might still be in existence except for man’s greed, immorality, materialism and the insatiable desire for power. Many men wanted to rule and control the empire and according to history, no one person can be blamed entirely on the demise of the Empire; the Roman foundation started to weaken and crumble as so often happens when people start to dwell on “self”with total disregard to morals and spirituality. Basically there were just too many agendas; too many people and way too much land for any one ruler to govern and keep in tact. Historians aren’t in agreement about what caused the fall of the empire, but certainly self - indulgence by all the affluent caused havoc in the empire’s stability. Class wars between the wealthy and lower class, changes of climate causing a decline in agricultural production and a Heinz mix of leaders who weren’t qualified to rule an empire should be considered. Corruption in the government, slavery and the list literally goes on and on… One fact that has been proven and repeated itself in history is when morality and spirituality have gone south; an empire or nation will not remain standing indefinitely. The Fall of Rome and the Berlin Wall although separated by many years of history show that the wrong leadership along with sociopolitical and military problems will quickly finish off an empire or nation. Today, in our sophisticated high tech world there are many elements of the Roman Empire that have been carried forward from one generation to the next and lives in our midst. Our government like the Romans is divided into three branches, Judicial, Executive and Legislative. After World War II, our government began to build a Federal highway system for tanks, in case our country was invaded. This is a parallel to the most sophisticated roadwork know in history created and constructed by the Romans to protect any and all territories during wartime. Another parallel to the Roman Empire is the way the wealthy seem to become wealthier, while the middle class and poor seem more and more to be intertwined. One must stop and consider that economics, poor leadership, materialism and immorality and wonder if in fact history does repeat itself. |
