The Birth of Rome

Just about everyone likes Disney and their make believe stories that unravel before our eyes. There’s nothing like a good story that depicts a villain, who is overpowered or slain by a heroe or heroine. This kind of drama whets our imagination and gets the adrenalin pumping even though we know the good guy or gal will win out in the end. We have been taught good always or should always win out over evil.

This is exactly the same story, many historians record about the birth of Rome. Hundreds of years ago the Romans worshipped Vesta (the goddess of fire) and built a temple of fire in her honor. Four young girls were selected at birth to guard Vesta’s temple and keep the fire burning for a period of 30 years.

As the story goes, one of the four vestal virgins gave birth to twins, Romulus and Remus. The young virgin declared that Mars the God of fertility was the father of the twins; the twin’s uncle didn’t buy this story and imprisoned his sister. The boys were placed on the Tiber River in an old basket thinking the basket would sink and drown the twins.

The boys were saved and when of age killed their uncle, because he had imprisoned their mother (his sister) for years. One day the boys had a disagreement and Romulus killed Remus and became Rome’s first real king. He rapidly grew his kingdom by recruiting people from other countries and abducting young women from other tribes.

All at once Romulus disappeared and returned briefly as a God declaring that Rome would be the capital of the world. Many Romans believed in mythology and as the years went by the Roman Empire evolved with many villages springing up over night.

For over a thousand years, the Roman Empire survived – it is the greatest empire of all times. It was the largest, encompassed the greatest mass of land and but like our society today the empire had a group of 3 major classes who were required to support the empire.
